A blooming century plant is featured in the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness north of Sedona, Arizona along the Chimney Rock Trail. Century plants live on average 25 years. The plants bloom only once after which they succumb to their own creative exuberance. The blooming spike is so large and grows so fast that it drains all the resources of the plant. The plant is called the "century plant" due to the exaggeration that it blooms only "once a century."
