Plein Air Paintings

En plein air is a French term which is often imprecisely translated to mean "in open air." The literal translation of the term more precisely means "in full air" or in proper context "in full atmosphere." Plein air paintings are, therefore, created by the artist while immersing himself in the full atmosphere of the subject. In this sense, the artist attempts to absorb all aspects of the surroundings, using all his senses. The highest aim of such a painting style is for the artist to act as a vessel through which the immediate sensory inputs combine with the artist's personal inspiration to communicate a deeper expression of the subject.

Due to the immediacy of this technique and the challenges of changing light, these paintings generally have a less detailed and more painterly presentation than paintings performed in the studio.
